Buildings destroyed near West Kelowna due to wildfire

West Kelowna has declared a state of emergency due to the McDougall Creek wildfire. The province of British Columbia has also declared a state of emergency.


Several properties have been destroyed in Trader Cove. Okanagan Lake Resort has been destroyed by fire. The UBC Okanagan campus was placed under an evacuation order and everyone was asked to leave campus immediately.


The fire is estimated to be 10,500 hectares in size and is 10 kilometres northwest of West Kelowna.


There are 380 active wildfires in the province, and 160 are out of control.
