Death toll in Japan rises after earthquake



A powerful earthquake on Monday in Japan has left at least 48 people dead.


There is major damage to roads and buildings on the west coast of the country. The damage is making it difficult for rescue operations.


Thousands of rescue workers including firefighters, police, and military personnel are trying to access the hardest hit area.


The 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 4:10 p.m. local time and was at a depth of 10 kilometres.


The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings.
