Death toll nears 100 in Hurricane Helene Aftermath

Helene may have moved out of the U.S. Southeast, but it has left a trail of destruction in the region.


So far 91 deaths have been confirmed. Most of the deaths were in the city of Asheville where 30 people were killed.


The Salvation Army has deployed emergency disaster services teams in several areas. FEMA has deployed search-and-rescue teams and sent bottled water and Starlink terminals.


Rescue workers are working through areas of collapsed roads, failing infrastructure and widespread flooding.


Power Outages

According to PowerOutage.us there are over 1.8 million customers still without power. Most of the outages are in South Carolina where 688,186 customers are without power. Georgia is reporting 533,529 outages, there are 399,097 customers out in North Carolina. There are 95,551 customers out in Florida and in Virginia there are 93,215 customers without power.


Another Threat?

There is a trough of low pressure over the southwestern Caribbean Sea, the feature could gradually become a tropical depression over the next few days. Those along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to watch the progress of this system.
