Hawaii hit by strong earthquake, damage reported

Hawaii was hit by a strong earthquake overnight. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake was centred 13.0 km south of Honaunau-Napoopoo, Hawaii, according to the United States Geological Survey.


It occurred at 9:46 p.m. local time and was at a depth of 22 km.


There were some reports of damage to homes. Some power lines were taken down, and there were reports of rockslides. Those on the Big Island reported shaking. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.


The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, said that no tsunami was expected but added that some areas may have experiences strong shaking.


Thousands of earthquakes are detected in Hawaii every year. Most are very small and are not felt by residents.
