Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a disaster following a major oil spill in Siberia that happened last Friday.

About 20,000 tons of oil spilled into a river after a tank collapsed. This is one of the biggest oil spills in Russian history.

Early estimates say it may cost $13 million in damage to fish and other resources.

Photos from the area show the river with a red tint.

The oil has stretched about 12 kilometres downstream. The oil was headed for the ocean.

An investigation is ongoing to determine what happened. Authorities detained the manager of the plant.
