A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey on Sunday evening, killing one person.
The earthquake happened at 7:53 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometres and was centred 11.4 kilometres south-southwest of Bigadiç, Turkey.
About a dozen buildings collapsed, and several aftershocks were recorded.
The United States Geological Survey says that the Mediterranean region is seismically active due to the northward convergence of the African plate with respect to the Eurasian plate along a complex plate boundary.
