Parts of southern Quebec could see severe thunderstorms develop today as a potent weather system moves across the province, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall.

A broad swath of southern Quebec faces a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms through Tuesday afternoon and evening, while a smaller corridor stretching from the Montreal area toward Sherbrooke is under a high risk for severe weather.

The greatest concern is across the high-risk area, where thunderstorms may produce:

  • Wind gusts of 100 to 110 km/h

  • 2 to 4 centimetre hail

  • 40 to 70 millimetres of rain

  • A risk of tornadoes developing with the strongest storms.

Elsewhere, areas under the moderate risk could experience wind gusts between 90 and 100 km/h, hail up to 2 centimetres in diameter and 30 to 50 millimetres of rainfall.

Farther north, a larger region of central Quebec remains under a minor risk, where isolated strong thunderstorms may still produce wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h, hail up to 1 centimetre and rainfall totals of 20 to 40 millimetres.
