Storm to impact Southern Ontario and Eastern Canada

A storm system will impact areas from Southern Ontario to Newfoundland over the next few days.


Ontario

Winter storm warnings, snowfall warnings, and weather advisories are in place across Southern and Eastern Ontario.


Across southern Ontario, snow will begin late this afternoon. For the GTA about 15 cm is expected, up to 20 cm could fall in areas near London and up to 10 cm for Windsor to Niagara Falls. This snowfall will impact the evening commute.


Snow may become mixed with ice pellets late this evening and overnight for some areas. There is also a risk of freezing rain in the Hamilton and Burlington areas late this evening and overnight. Snow will gradually taper off on Thursday morning.


20 to 30 cm of snow is expected for areas west and north of the GTA.


Total amounts of up to 40 cm are likely for areas North of Kingston including Ottawa.


Quebec

Total snowfall accumulations of 25 to 40 centimetres are expected beginning late this evening through Thursday evening for southwestern areas of Quebec.


Snowfall accumulations of 15 to 30 centimetres are expected beginning Thursday morning through Friday morning for the Montreal and Quebec City areas.


Total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 25 centimetres are expected beginning Thursday morning through Friday morning for areas south of the St. Lawrence River.


The Lower North Shore will see significant snow and wind gusts to 80 km/h from Thursday evening to Friday evening.


New Brunswick

Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm is expected across central and northern New Brunswick from Thursday morning until Thursday night.


Snow is expected to mix with ice pellets Thursday afternoon and evening over Queens, Sunbury, and southern York counties. Southern New Brunswick will see 15 cm in the heaviest snow. Snow will change to ice pellets or freezing rain at times over parts of southern New Brunswick on Thursday afternoon.


Nova Scotia

Thursday and Thursday evening most of Nova Scotia will see precipitation start out as snow and transition to ice pellets and periods of freezing rain in the afternoon. A changeover to rain may also occur over southern sections of the province late in the day.


Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island will see snow starting on Thursday midday and continuing into Thursday night. 15 to 20 cm of snow is possible over western sections along with wind gusts to 70 km/h.


Ice pellets and freezing rain may mix in over eastern and central areas Thursday evening and overnight.


Newfoundland

For the eastern half of Newfoundland, snow, blowing snow, and strong winds are expected from Thursday night through Friday morning. 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected along with wind gusts between 70 to 80 km/h and possibly 100 km/h over some exposed coastal areas. Around noon on Friday, snow will change to rain, drizzle, or freezing drizzle.


For the western half of Newfoundland including the Great Northern Peninsula, snow, blowing snow, and strong winds will develop Thursday night and continue into Friday morning before tapering to flurries or freezing drizzle from south to north. The snow will continue all day over the Great Northern Peninsula. Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 20 cm are possible. Wind gusts between 70 to 110 km/h, except locally 130 to 150 km/h in the Wreckhouse area and parts of the west coast prone to enhanced downslope easterlies to southeasterlies are expected.
