Strong earthquake prompts tsunami threat in Vanuatu region


A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Vanuatu region today. The earthquake was centered 123.9 km south of Isangel, Vanuatu.


It occurred at 11:56 pm local time and was at a depth of 48 km.


The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, Hawaii initially that hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicentre.


The tsunami threat has since passed.
