Authorities have reported that one person has died following a strong earthquake in Mexico.

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck 4.3 kilometres north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Mexico. Rancho Viejo is located in the southern area of the country near the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake struck at 7:58 a.m. local time and was at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Following the earthquake, there were reports of landslides and damage to buildings in the state of Guerrero.

Earthquakes are fairly common in Mexico. Thousands of earthquakes are detected in Mexico every year, most are small and not felt by people. Strong earthquakes happen every few years.
