Temperatures soar across Nunavut beating records

Many areas of Nunavut have saw a period of abnormally warm temperatures this weekend. Several locations beat daily, monthly, and all-time records.


Temperatures will return to more normal values later this week.


On Sunday, seven locations set a daily or monthly maximum temperature record.


Arctic Bay set a new record of 19.4, the old record of 17.2 was set in 1948. Igloolik set a new record of 24.6, the old record of 22.0 was set in 2002. Iqaluit reached a new record of 25.1, the old record of 22.8 was set in 1948.


A new record of 19.0 was reached in Kinngait and a new record of 23.6 was set in Kugaaruk. Pond Inlet reached a new high of 20.6 while Sanirajak got up to 24.3.

On Saturday, several areas tied or broke monthly or all-time records. Coral Harbour reached 27.1, it was the third highest recorded temperature for July and all-time. The all time record of 28.0 was set on July 28, 2001.

Kugaaruk recorded a high of 27.5, it is now tied the monthly record and the second highest all-time temperature. The all-time high of 29.0 was set on August 4, 1998.


Sanirajak reached 25.4, an all-time record for highest temperature. The previous record was 24.8 and was set on August 5, 1991.
