Tropical cyclone formation likely near western Mexico
There is an area of low pressure south of Acapulco, Mexico. The low is becoming better organized and a tropical depression or a tropical storm could form later today.
Over the next day or so the system is expected to move slowly west-northwestward or northwestward and will be off the southern coast of Mexico.
Those along the southern and southwestern coast of Mexico should monitor the progress of this system during the next few days.
There have been 16 named storms so far this year. The next named storm will be Rick.
The season officially began on May 15 in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, and on June 1 in the Central Pacific; both will end on November 30.
