Update on the Atlantic Canada Storm

It is important to note that weather models are not in agreement with snowfall and rainfall amounts. Please keep that in mind.

A low pushing through Atlantic Canada is making this a white Friday as opposed to Black Friday.

There are several travel disruptions and closures in anticipation of the storm.

The Maritimes have already seen one dose, but now snow squalls are expected.

For northwestern sections of Nova Scotia and on Prince Edward Island there are snow squalls expected. From Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, 20 to 40 cm is expected for northern Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Highlands and eastern Prince Edward Island.

In Newfoundland, the Avalon and Burin are seeing snow. That snow will change over to rain with a risk of ice pellets as the day goes on.

Central Newfoundland will hold on to snow all day before a changeover to rain overnight. Some areas near the coast could see rain or a rain-snow mix. This rain-snow mix will result in lower snowfall amounts.

Western Newfoundland will see snow continuing. Some areas near the coast could see rain or a rain-snow mix. This rain-snow mix will result in lower snowfall amounts. As the low pulls away, snow squalls are possible on the west coast on Sunday.

Gusty winds are expected across the Island.

In Labrador, coastal areas could see snowfall amounts up to 40 cm and wind gusts to 120 km/h. These severe conditions will linger through Sunday.

On the Avalon Peninsula in central Newfoundland, there are several school closures and delayed openings.

All Marine Atlantic crossings scheduled for today are now rescheduled for Saturday. However, crossings on Saturday may be impacted as well.
