Wet and Windy Weekend for Atlantic Canada

An area of low pressure is making for a very unsettled weekend across Atlantic Canada.

New Brunswick

Rain will fall over most of the province. In Northern sections, freezing rain is expected. Rainfall amounts will range from 5 to 15 mm.

Prince Edward Island

Rain will begin this morning and continue this afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 mm are expected.

Nova Scotia

Rain will continue over the course of the day before tapering off this afternoon. Across Nova Scotia, you could hear the odd rumble of thunder today. Rainfall amounts will range from 15 to 30 mm.

Newfoundland & Labrador

Snow will move into southern Labrador and western Newfoundland this afternoon. Snow will make it to western Newfoundland late this afternoon and to the Avalon this evening. The snow will change to rain for all areas of the Island tonight. Rain will continue tomorrow.

The heaviest rain is expected on the south coast, up to 40 mm is possible. For the northern Avalon and west coast, 15 to 25 mm is expected. Strong winds are also expected. Southeastern parts of LAbrador may receive 20 cm of snow.

Conditions will largely improve in Newfoundland on Saturday night, however, due to the counter-clockwise spin of the low, temperatures will once again fall. There is a risk of sea-effect snow along the west coast.

Marine Atlantic Cancelling Crossings & Closing Terminals

Marine Atlantic has cancelled ferry crossings for today and tomorrow. Crossings for Sunday may also be impacted.

Marine Atlantic has also closed its terminals in North Sydney and Port aux Basques. The decision to close the terminals is due to the multiple crossings that are cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, combined with current protocols surrounding the isolation of high-risk customers in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the need for social distancing.

The terminal marshalling yards will remain open, space permitting, for commercial drop trailer traffic only.

Operations are expected to resume Sunday evening.
