Eastern Newfoundland is getting another blast of winter today.

An Orange Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for St. John’s and vicinity, Avalon Peninsula North, Clarenville and vicinity and the Bonavista Peninsula, where total snow accumulations of 30 to 60 centimetres are forecast. Northerly winds are expected to gust up to 80 to 100 kilometres per hour, producing frequent blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions.

Yellow-level warnings cover Avalon Peninsula Southeast and Southwest, Terra Nova, Bonavista North and the Gander region, with expected additional snow accumulations ranging from 20 to 30 centimetres and winds of 60 to 80 km/h along parts of the coast.

In parts of central Newfoundland around Grand Falls-Windsor, a special weather statement remains in place, with prolonged significant snowfall into the weekend. Winds reaching 50 to 70 km/h may reduce visibility in blowing snow, particularly over exposed terrain.

The storm has already had an impact with thousands of Newfoundland Power customers without electricity. There are multiple school closures in eastern areas and business closures.

Residents are being urged to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve.
