Winter storm to impact portions of Newfoundland


A winter storm that moved through the Maritimes on Thursday will now impact parts of Newfoundland with heavy snow and strong winds.


Nova Scotia

There is some snow lingering across portions of Cape Breton Island. Total accumulations of 20 to 25 cm are possible for Victoria county and Sydney Metro and Cape Breton county by the time the snow ends this afternoon.


Winds over Margaree Harbour to Bay St. Lawrence will diminish but gusts to 130 km/h are possible early this morning.


Newfoundland

Snow has already moved into southwestern Newfoundland. Snow will fall across the south coast, the Avalon, and parts of central today, tonight, and Saturday. The snow will begin to end from west to east Saturday morning.


Snowfall forecast (Friday to Sunday)

  • St. John's 30-50 cm

  • Carbonear 25-30 cm

  • Placentia 15-25 cm

  • Trepassey 15-35 cm

  • Marystown 15-25 cm

  • Clarenville 25-30 cm

  • Grand Falls-Windsor 3-7 cm

  • Port aux Basques 10-15 cm

Winds will also be strong across the south coast, Avalon Peninsula, Clarenville, up through Terra Nova and the Bonavista Peninsula with gusts between 80 and 100 km/h possible. In the Wreckhouse area, gusts to 110 km/h are possible.


Marine Atlantic has cancelled the following departures:

  • North Sydney to Port aux Basques Friday, March 24, 2023 at 1145

  • Port aux Basques to North Sydney Friday, March 24, 2023 at 1145
