Yellowknife residents ordered to evacuate as wildfire threatens city

Yellowknife residents have been ordered to begin evacuating the city immediately as wildfires threaten the capital of the Northwest Territories.

Municipal and Community Affairs Minister Shane Thompson has declared a Territorial State of Emergency.

The highway from Yellowknife to Alberta is safe to travel on. Air evacuations will begin this afternoon.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he has spoken with Premier Caroline Cochrane and that the federal government will assist however they can.

The Canadian Armed Forces have been mobilized.

Cochrane said, "We’re all tired of the word unprecedented, yet there is no other way to describe this situation in the Northwest Territories. The country is watching, and our neighbours are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers."
