Much of Ontario is facing extreme winter weather conditions Monday, with bitterly cold temperatures and lake-effect snow expected to impact travel and outdoor safety.

Most of southern Ontario will experience dangerously cold conditions Monday morning, with wind chill values between –30 and –35. In parts of central Ontario, wind chills could dip as low as –40. Prolonged exposure to the cold could result in frostbite or hypothermia without adequate protection.

Snow and blowing snow are forecast for portions of the Lake Superior shoreline, where lake-enhanced snowfall is expected to bring between 10 and 15 centimetres to the north shore. Strong winds gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour may reduce visibility, creating difficult travel conditions. The snow and blowing snow could persist into early Tuesday morning.

Extreme southwestern Ontario is also expected to see very cold conditions Monday morning, with wind chill values near –30. Officials caution that spending extended periods outdoors without proper clothing could pose a risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Drivers and residents are urged to take precautions, limit time outdoors when possible and prepare for hazardous travel conditions in affected areas.
