An intense weather system brought widespread heavy rainfall to northern and central Alberta over the weekend, resulting in localized flooding and sewer backups in some areas.
The system delivered significant amounts of rain on June 20 and 21, with some of the highest totals recorded in and around the Edmonton region.
As of 4 a.m. MDT Monday, the largest rainfall total was reported at Elk Island National Park, where 133 millimetres of rain had fallen. Other notable amounts included 123 millimetres in Stony Plain, 95 millimetres in Edmonton and Villeneuve, and 89 millimetres in Barrhead.
Localized flooding and sewer backups were reported in the Edmonton area on Sunday as the heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems.
Lighter rain was expected to continue through Monday morning before the weather system weakens and moves out of the province.
Additional rainfall totals reported by Environment Canada included 68 millimetres in Camrose, 51 millimetres at Hendrickson Creek, 48 millimetres in Edson, 47 millimetres in Lacombe and 45 millimetres in Vegreville.
Communities including Whitecourt, Nordegg, Red Deer, Wainwright, Lac La Biche, Lloydminster, Slave Lake and Rocky Mountain House also recorded significant rainfall during the event.
