How to choose the best sunscreen

As temperatures rise and more people spend time outdoors, choosing the right sunscreen is one of the most important steps in preventing sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer.

With store shelves packed with sprays, lotions and mineral formulas, finding the best sunscreen can feel overwhelming. Dermatologists recommend starting with broad-spectrum protection, which shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are linked to skin aging, while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn.

Experts also suggest choosing a sunscreen with a sun protection factor, or SPF, of at least 30. Higher SPF products offer additional protection, though no sunscreen blocks 100 per cent of the sun’s rays.

Water resistance is another key factor, especially for people swimming, sweating or spending long periods outdoors. Water-resistant sunscreens are designed to stay effective for either 40 or 80 minutes in wet conditions, but it is still recommend reapplying every two hours, or sooner after swimming or towel drying.

For people with sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are often recommended. These products sit on top of the skin and reflect sunlight, rather than absorbing it. Chemical sunscreens, meanwhile, absorb UV rays and are often lighter and easier to rub in.

Parents are also encouraged to use sunscreen specifically designed for children, as these products are typically gentler on sensitive skin.

Sunscreen should not be the only line of defence against the sun. Wearing hats, sunglasses and lightweight clothing, along with seeking shade during peak afternoon hours, can further reduce the risk of sun damage.

Sunscreen should be worn even on cloudy days, as ultraviolet rays can still pass through cloud cover and damage the skin.
