Larry could slam Newfoundland as a category one hurricane

This morning Larry remains a category three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h.

The storm is moving northwest and is expected to impact the weather in Newfoundland on Friday night and Saturday.

At this time it looks like 20 to 40 mm of rain is possible for most of the Avalon with higher amounts expected on the southeastern Avalon. There will also be a trough approaching from the west. Central Newfoundland will see about 10 to 20 mm of rain and the west coast could see 15 to 25 mm.

The winds will be the strongest on the Avalon. Wind gusts on the southern Avalon could reach 140 km/h. Gusts to 120 km/h are expected Elsewhere on the Avalon. The exact track will be critical since the strongest winds are typically in the northeast quadrant of a storm so the strongest wind could remain offshore.

It is important to have an emergency kit ready. There could be power outages. Wind damage is also possibly combined with large waves and pounding surf.
