Residents of Newfoundland are being warned of a potent low-pressure system expected to bring heavy rainfall, wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h, and the risk of coastal flooding beginning Tuesday and lasting into Wednesday.
Wind Warning in effect
A wind warning is in place for St. John’s and vicinity (Avalon and Burin Peninsulas) with southeasterly gusts of 80 to 110 km/h expected Tuesday afternoon, followed by west- to southwesterly gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h Tuesday night.
Disruptions to services and travel are possible; exposed areas and coastal regions will be most impacted.
Heavy Rain and Coastal Flooding Potential
A special weather statement identifies a rapidly deepening low moving in from the south Tuesday onward. Rainfall of 30 to 50 mm is expected across most of the island, with locally higher amounts likely along the south coast. Simultaneously, significant rainfall, winds over 100 km/h and coastal flooding due to storm surge and large waves are expected along large stretches of the coast — particularly the southeast and northeast regions.
What you should do
Secure loose outdoor objects and prepare for gusty winds, particularly along the coast.
Be alert for hazardous travel conditions caused by heavy rain and wind.
Those near shorelines should be aware of rising seas, large waves and storm-surge impacts — move vehicles and gear away from the water’s edge if possible.
Timing
The main outflow of rain and wind is expected to start on Tuesday (around midday) and persist into Wednesday, with winds gradually easing thereafter.
