Rain, Snow and Strong Winds Affected Parts of Northeastern Ontario

Parts of northeastern Ontario are seeing periods of rain, snow and strong winds as a low-pressure system tracks through the lower Great Lakes.

Rain began early this morning, with totals ranging from 15 to 40 millimetres expected across the region. The highest amounts are expected along the northern shoreline of the North Channel. Frozen ground limits absorption, increasing the risk of localized flash flooding, water pooling on roads and reduced visibility.

As temperatures fall below zero later today, rain will change over to snow in many areas.

Snow accumulations of 8 to 15 centimetres are possible in portions of northeastern and far northeastern Ontario by Friday evening. Some locations see rain at the start before the precipitation transitions to snow, leading to slippery, snow-covered roads and walkways and difficult travel conditions.

Strong winds also develop on Friday afternoon along the eastern shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Westerly to northwesterly wind gusts will reach up to 80 kilometres per hour.
