Thousands Forced Out of Fort McMurray After Mandatory Evacuation Order

Thousands of residents in the lower townsite of Fort McMurray are under a mandatory evacuation order as floodwaters continue to rise.

So far more than 5,000 people have registered at evacuation centres that have been set up.

For those who are evacuating and do not require accommodations or immediate support, you are not required to check in at receptions centres at this time.

Registration Centres are located at:

• Oil Sands Discovery Centre, 515 MacKenzie Boulevard (primary centre)

• Casman Centre, 110 Eymundson Road (secondary centre)

People are advised to continue to practice physical distancing and exercise caution.

Significant resources are being dedicated to berming and sandbagging the area surrounding the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre to mitigate flood risk. There is no threat to this area at this time and officials remain in constant communication with staff at the hospital.

A Voluntary Evacuation Notice has been issued for Grayling Terrace and the gas was shut off this morning.

On April 27, 2020, Fort McMurray suffered a flood. It devastated the downtown of Fort McMurray, submerging streets and ruining businesses, cars and houses, and completely wrecking a street, Manning Ave.
