Transport Canada is asking Canadians to share their experiences with vehicle headlight glare as part of a new public consultation aimed at improving road safety.
The consultation, titled Canadian experience with vehicle headlights and glare at night, opened March 6 and will run until April 20, 2026. Officials say the feedback will help better understand how modern vehicle lighting affects drivers, pedestrians and other road users.
Transport Canada notes that while advances in headlight technology have improved visibility for drivers, they can also create challenges for others on the road, particularly in low-light conditions. The department is seeking input on how glare impacts visibility and what vehicle or lighting features may contribute to the issue.
The survey, which takes roughly 10 minutes to complete, is open to Canadians aged 16 and older and is expected to help inform future safety standards and possible updates to vehicle lighting regulations.
Concerns about increasingly bright headlights—particularly LED and high-intensity lighting—have grown in recent years, with some drivers reporting discomfort or temporary loss of visibility when facing oncoming traffic.
Transport Canada says the consultation is part of broader efforts to ensure vehicle technologies strike the right balance between improving driver visibility and reducing risks for others on the road.
Canadians interested in participating can complete the survey online through the federal government’s consultation webpage.
