Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami advisories and warnings after a large earthquake off the coast of northern Japan.
Tsunami warnings are in effect for the prefectures of Aomori, Hokkaido, and Iwate.
A three-metre high tsunami is possible, and some three-metre waves have been observed.
The tsunami is a result of a 7.6 magnitude earthquake.
It occurred 73.6 km east-northeast of Misawa, Japan, at a depth of 53 km. It occurred at 11:15 p.m. local time.
Remember, a tsunami is a series of waves, not only one and the first wave may not be the highest.
There have been localized reports of injuries. No major damage has been reported.
What to do:
Move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for instructions if you feel a large earthquake.
Stay away from beaches and shorelines. Even if the water looks calm.
Follow official alerts. Local authorities will provide instructions—do not rely on rumours or social media.
Do not return to low-lying areas until officials declare it safe.
Go on foot if possible. Roads may be jammed or damaged.
Climb to at least 30 metres above sea level or as far inland as you can.
If you’re already at sea, stay offshore and avoid returning to port.
Never try to watch the waves. A tsunami moves faster than a person can run.
