Weather bomb hitting Newfoundland

A low-pressure system is moving across Newfoundland and Labrador this afternoon and evening, bringing persistent heavy rainfall and strong winds. Precipitation is underway and will continue through the evening into the overnight hours. Most areas will see 30 to 60 mm of rain.

Winds will gust between 80 and 110 km/h.

Coastal flooding is also a concern.

Key concerns:

Widespread rain may lead to reduced visibility and slick road surfaces, especially where accumulations begin or surfaces cool.

Temperatures approaching the freezing mark could increase the risk of icy patches, especially on untreated surfaces or bridges. Motorists and public transit users should drive cautiously and allow extra time.

Although heavy accumulations are not currently forecast, lingering moisture combined with colder overnight temperatures raises the possibility of localized freezing — especially after midnight.

Advisory to residents:

Secure loose outdoor items and ensure drainage paths are clear to avoid localized ponding or overflow.

If you must travel this evening or overnight, monitor conditions and consider delaying non-urgent trips as icing becomes more likely.
