A powerful winter storm is bringing widespread snow and difficult travel conditions to much of southern and central Ontario today.
Environment Canada says a low-pressure system tracking south of the Great Lakes could produce 15 to 25 centimetres of snow across the eastern Greater Golden Horseshoe, Niagara region, and parts of eastern and central Ontario. Snowfall rates may reach three centimetres per hour during peak commuting times.
The western Greater Golden Horseshoe and portions of southwestern Ontario are forecast to receive 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, with similarly hazardous travel conditions expected throughout the day.
Meanwhile, areas southeast of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are expected to see ongoing lake-effect snow through this morning. Snowfall totals of 10 to 20 centimetres are possible under the strongest bands, along with reduced visibility and blowing snow as northwest winds gust up to 60 km/h.
Motorists are being urged to adjust travel plans where possible and allow extra time for commutes as conditions deteriorate across affected regions.
